Development assessment must move faster

Australia underperforms in the delivery of efficient, fair and consistent planning and development assessment systems, according to the Residential Development Council (RDC) and the Property Council of Australia. In the recently released Development Assessment Forum Implementation Report Card, development assessment reform progress across the states and territories was highlighted. Based on their current performances against each of the 10 Development Assessment Forum principles, the Northern Territory outperformed the nation while New South Wales and Tasmania trailed behind in equal last position. But RDC executive director Caryn Kakas said more needs to be done to further the Council of Australian Governments' (COAG) efforts to fast-track development assessment implementation around the country. "The announcement of planning reform through COAG has provided us with a path to improving systems nationally," Kakas said. "However, we need to ensure these announcements are carried through and the next steps are already being considered if we are to achieve the necessary reform." Source: Australian Property News
